A statement published last week by the Caribbean Community (Caricom), following a visit to Haiti by an eminent persons group (EPG), warns of an “erosion of public confidence” in Haiti’s nine-member transitional presidential council (TPC), singling out “strident demands” for three TPC members, Louis Gérald Gilles, Smith Augustin, and Emmanuel Vertilaire, to be withdrawn. The statement is the latest sign of concern regarding a new corruption scandal that is threatening the credibility of the TPC, which was established in late April [WR-24-17] as per a Caricom-brokered March agreement following the unprecedented gang attacks in late February which ultimately ejected former prime minister Ariel Henry (2021-2024). The brewing scandal is casting doubt over the future of the TPC, which, together with Prime Minister Garry Conille, has the mammoth task of overseeing the restoration of security to Haiti and ultimately steering the country towards its first elections since 2016.End of preview - This article contains approximately 667 words.
