Mulino denounces drug-related corruption in Panama

Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino made the incendiary claim last week that the state had been infiltrated at “all levels” by drug trafficking and dirty money. Mulino, who took office in July, said his administration was committed to rooting out corruption and misconduct. His anti-corruption zeal was questioned from the outset of his presidency, however, given that his close ally, former president Ricardo Martinelli (2009-2014), is currently in Nicaragua’s embassy in Panama City having been convicted for money laundering last year. After Martinelli was barred from running, Mulino, who had been his running mate, took over the top spot on the joint slate.
