PARAGUAY-BRAZIL: Police kill lawmaker suspected of organised crime ties

Paraguay’s national police (PN) raided the home of national deputy Eulalio Gomes in the north-eastern city of Pedro Juan Caballero on 19 August. However, the deputy engaged in a shootout with the PN officers and was killed. The raid on Gomes’ home was part of Operation ‘Pavo Real II’, a continuation of previous investigations into the networks of drug traffickers who control the smuggling routes around the Paraguay-Brazil border.
