DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Abinader undertakes sweeping reforms

Dominican President Luis Abinader was sworn-in for a second term on 16 August after winning re-election. Abinader won an emphatic victory in the presidential elections in May but also a decisive majority in both chambers of congress in concurrent congressional elections, which will enable him to advance his government’s legislative priorities. He spelt some of these out during his inaugural address, including constitutional, electoral, fiscal, labour, healthcare, and police reforms.
