Historic drought worsens fires in Pantanal

Environmental groups, such as international NGO World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), have warned that a severe drought this year could cause the worst ever wildfire season in one of the world’s largest and most biodiverse wetlands, the Pantanal biome of south-western Brazil. The state government of Mato Grosso do Sul and the federal government ramped up their collaborative fire response measures in June, but fires have flared up again in July, and authorities will be wary of the risk of reignition as the dry season continues until September.
