MEXICO: Chiapas violence fuels displacement

Mexico’s Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena met with her Guatemalan counterpart, Carlos Ramiro Martínez, to discuss migration and security on 2 August. In particular, the pair addressed a recent surge in migration between Amatenango de la Frontera municipality in Mexico’s southern state of Chiapas and Cuilco municipality in Guatemala’s department of Huehuetenango. In a reversal of the typical trend, the migrants were moving south, fleeing from violence in Chiapas to seek refuge in Guatemala.
