MEXICO: Synthetic drugs in the limelight

In its World Drug Report published on 26 June, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) highlighted the challenges presented by synthetic drugs. Often cheaper, faster, and more profitable to produce and traffic than plant-based drugs, criminal organisations across the world have increasingly made the shift to synthetics, with Mexico’s Sinaloa drug trafficking organisation (DTO) and the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) chief among them. Mexico’s role in the synthetic drug trade is garnering increasing attention, with the US administration of President Joe Biden leading the charge in issuing sanctions against the players involved and lobbying the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to do more to address the threat.
