PARAGUAY: Government claims success against drug trafficking

Authorities intercepted a large shipment of cocaine on 15 July at a port in the capital Asunción. The drugs were concealed in sacks of sugar and were due to be smuggled to Europe. President Santiago Peña praised the law enforcement units for the drug bust and affirmed his government’s commitment to combating drug trafficking organisations (DTOs), repeating the spending plans mentioned in his state-of-the-nation speech at the start of July, when he pledged to boost investment in security.
