BRAZIL: Debates over drug decriminalisation intensify

The supreme court (STF) ruled in late June to decriminalise the possession of up to 40g of cannabis for personal use, in a high-profile case which has inflamed tensions between the judiciary and legislature. While the top court seeks a shift from the punitive approach that has traditionally characterised drug policy in Brazil, conservative parties in congress have advanced legislation seeking to criminalise the possession of any quantity of any drug.
