COSTA RICA: Chaves floats reviving mining and megaprojects

Costa Rica’s main opposition Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) has agreed to create a committee to analyse the possibility raised by President Rodrigo Chaves of reviving the Crucitas open-pit gold mine in San Carlos, Alajuela province, near the border with Nicaragua. Chaves’ proposal followed a victory claimed by his government over a dispute with Canadian mining company Infinito Gold regarding the 2010 cancellation of the gold concession. Reviving the project, which follows Chaves’ suggestion in May of revisiting a controversial dam initiative, would likely prove very controversial, however, given the approval of a non-retroactive law banning open-pit mining in the country which was passed in 2010 under the previous PLN government led by Óscar Arias (1986-1990; 2006-2010).
