US federal agents arrested one of Mexico’s most notorious drug kingpins on 25 July: Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada García, the alleged co-founder and leader of the Sinaloa drug trafficking organisation (DTO). Zambada was arrested alongside another important member of the DTO. However, Mexico’s government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was conspicuous in its silence following the arrests.
