MEXICO: Capture of Sinaloa drug kingpin raises questions
US federal agents arrested one of Mexico’s most notorious drug kingpins on 25 July: Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada García, the alleged co-founder and leader of the Sinaloa drug trafficking organisation (DTO). Zambada was arrested alongside another important member of the DTO. However, Mexico’s government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was conspicuous in its silence following the arrests. When López Obrador and top security officials did eventually speak out, it was to confirm that Mexico had not participated in the arrests and to request full details of the operation from the US administration of President Joe Biden.
