BRAZIL: Lula signals fiscal restraint

In a televised address on 28 July, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva listed the major achievements of his government since taking office in January last year and affirmed that he will “not give up on fiscal responsibility”. A week earlier the planning & budget ministry confirmed a budget freeze for 2024, and on 30 July the government announced more details about how the budgets of various ministries would be impacted by the freeze.
