*The Central American Development Bank (BCIE) has announced a US$80m loan for the execution of the ‘Sustainable Recovery Programme for Lake Yojoa’ as part of a US$100m total investment. Lake Yojoa is the largest natural lake in Honduras, located 75km to the south of San Pedro Sula city (Cortés department), where the departments of Comayagua, Santa Bárbara, and Cortés converge. According to the BCIE, the programme’s objective is to promote the comprehensive and sustainable restoration of the ecosystem of the Lake Yojoa basin. As well as the US$80m loan, €14.0m (US$15m) in non-reimbursable funding contributions and technical assistance are being managed from the European Union (EU) with the remainder to be covered with national funds. The initiative will be executed by Honduras’ environment ministry (Serna) and includes “innovative measures that address the multiple threats to the ecosystem of Lake Yojoa through the implementation of strategies for governance and territorial planning, capacity building, resilient infrastructure, and sustainable development and conservation. The BCIE expects that over 167,100 Hondurans from the municipalities of the Lake Yojoa Basin and its area of influence will benefit through the project’s execution.
