*Brazil’s ministry for ports and airports has launched the ‘Voa Brasil’ (Fly Brazil) programme, which aims to make air travel more affordable. In the first phase of the initiative, retirees who have not flown in the past 12 months will be eligible for an airfare reduction for domestic flights. Airlines have agreed to set a maximum price of R$200 (U$35) per leg for retirees who buy their plane tickets through Voa Brasil. The government estimates that around 23m people should be eligible for this first phase of the programme. The launch of Voa Brasil comes amid concerns over the country’s aviation industry. Brazilian airlines have struggled to recover from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic’s impact on tourism, and consumer demand for flights has been hampered by high airfares.
