ARGENTINA: Challenges persist despite political win for Milei

Argentina’s President Javier Milei scored a major victory with the approval in late June of his ‘omnibus bill’ and fiscal reform by the lower chamber of congress. The two pieces of legislation give him a host of powers to downsize and deregulate the Argentine state, while streamlining the country’s unwieldy tax system. But it may be some time before any of those measures bring concrete results to the real economy and to average citizens. Following initial economic success, the government is facing growing challenges to defeat inflation and eliminate currency controls.
