In brief: Brazil’s services sector stagnates in May

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its figures for the services sector in May, showing 0.0% variation in services volume from April and a 0.8% increase compared to May last year. This monthly stagnation comes after two consecutive months of growth in the sector. The accumulated services volume in the 12 months until May 2024 registered an increase of 1.3% from the previous 12-month period. Of the five categories of services measured, three registered a monthly drop in volume in May. Transport and postal services (-1.6%) was the category which saw the greatest monthly drop. The slump in transport was mainly driven by a significant decrease in air travel, which was down 15.3% from April.
