Mercosur membership unlikely to revive Bolivia’s troubled economy

Bolivia officially became the fifth member state of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) on 5 July, when President Luis Arce promulgated a bill to join the trade bloc. Bolivia’s accession comes as Mercosur is beset with internal divisions, and it is unlikely to provide a significant boost to an economy that is struggling with shortages of hard currency and dwindling hydrocarbon reserves.
