MEXICO: Tensions mount over judicial reform

The sweeping judicial reform proposal being pursued by Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is causing significant friction. López Obrador and President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum snubbed the chief justice of the supreme court (SCJN), Norma Piña, this week after she urged talks over the judicial reform initiative that López Obrador is planning to present to the new congress, which will be sworn in on 1 September, including the deeply contentious introduction of the direct election of judges.
