ECUADOR: Opposition walks fine line with eye on elections

Ecuador’s opposition-controlled national assembly is playing a balancing act as it tries to dent President Daniel Noboa’s popularity ahead of the general elections scheduled for February 2025 without appearing like it is acting against the national interest. That tension was on full display this week, with legislators approving a government bill to lengthen prison sentences for a range of crimes, while also pushing ahead with a plan to impeach Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld and Interior Minister Mónica Palencia.
