VENEZUELA: Campaign begins with new opposition probe

The campaign period for Venezuela’s 28 July presidential election officially started on 4 July, although in reality President Nicolás Maduro and the opposition coalition Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD), represented by Edmundo González, have been campaigning for months. Concern remains widespread that Maduro is plotting some last-minute subterfuge to rig the election in his favour. In an ominous sign for González, the authorities have opened investigations into two terrorist plots that are allegedly being prepared by the opposition.
