MEXICO: Violence taints historic elections
Claudia Sheinbaum won Mexico’s presidential elections for the ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) by a landslide on 2 June. With 59% of the vote – some 35.9m votes – Sheinbaum becomes the president-elect to receive the most votes of any in Mexican history, as well as the first women to be elected to the role. However, among these records comes one less savoury feat. By many estimates, the 2024 electoral process was the most violent in Mexico’s history with local civil society organisations documenting over 30 murders of candidates and many more of other political operators. This electoral violence is indicative of the wider security issues that will face Sheinbaum when she takes office on 1 October.
