MEXICO: Sheinbaum’s top security challenges

Insecurity is likely to be one of the biggest challenges facing Claudia Sheinbaum when she takes over the presidency from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on 1 October. Many view security as one of the weakest points of López Obrador’s government, with more murders registered during his administration than any other in Mexico’s history. The political opposition seized on this during the campaigning period and is likely to keep the pressure up during Sheinbaum’s time in office. As well as combatting Mexico’s powerful drug trafficking organisations (DTOs), other challenges for Sheinbaum, who won the 2 June election by a landslide, include addressing femicides and violence against women, tackling the country’s disappearance crisis, and engaging with the US priorities of fentanyl and migration.
