VENEZUELA: Unexpected engagement with US raises questions

Discussions between President Nicolás Maduro’s government and the US unexpectedly resumed on 3 July, just three weeks before the 28 July presidential election. It is unclear quite what Maduro hopes to gain from the talks, with possible goals ranging from a last-ditch attempt to secure the lifting of US sanctions, to discussing the terms of his potential departure.
