BOLIVIA: Doubts set in over coup claims

One week after he appeared to stave off a military uprising, Bolivia’s President Luis Arce is facing mounting accusations that he fabricated a coup attempt to boost his popularity ahead of next year’s presidential election. This claim was initially made by the leader of the insurrection, army commander Juan José Zúñiga, shortly before his arrest on 26 June [WR-24-25]. It has since been repeated by Arce’s opponents from across the political spectrum, suggesting that any solidarity for the government could be short-lived.
