*Mexico’s President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum has announced, during her third ‘transition tour’ with current President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, that they are jointly reviewing the budget required to expand the Tren Maya tourist railway, a flagship project of López Obrador. The railway covers over 1,500km and traverses Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula, with Palenque, Chiapas state, in the southwest and Cancún, Quintana Roo state, in the northeast marking its most distant points. Sheinbaum, who takes office on 1 October, was also widely cited by the media as saying that “apart from carrying passengers, it is also going to be a freight project,” adding that she has been looking at how much funding would be necessary to move forward with the freight train next year. She was also cited as saying that she was analysing a proposal of incoming Yucatán state governor Joaquín Díaz to expand the passenger service up to port city, Progreso.
