In brief: Peru’s Boluarte visits China

*Peru’s President Dina Boluarte has begun an official visit to China, which will last from 23-28 June. According to a presidential statement, Boluarte will first travel to Shenzhen for a meeting with the president of Chinese telecommunications firm Huawei, where she will sign an agreement on training in new technologies and artificial intelligence. She will also meet representatives from Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD, with whom she is expected to make the case for a BYD manufacturing plant in Peru. From there Boluarte will travel to Shanghai for a meeting with China Ocean Shipping Company (Cosco), the main stakeholder in the Chancay mega-port which is being built north of Lima and is scheduled to open in November. She will also attend a conference of around 250 Chinese business representatives for discussions on investment opportunities in Peru. Boluarte’s trip will end in Beijing with a meeting with President Xi Jinping on 28 June, with whom she is expected to sign agreements on political dialogue, investment, technology transfers, tourism, and trade.
