*Brazil’s government has announced an initiative known as the ‘Rota Quadrante Rondon’, part of a wider strategy to expand infrastructure on the country’s borders to boost trade within South America as well as facilitate trade with Asian countries. The announcement was made at an event in Cáceres municipality, Mato Grosso state, which was attended by several cabinet ministers, including
Carlos Fávaro (agriculture),
Simone Tebet (planning & budget), and
Waldez Góes (regional development). The ministers announced ten construction projects, including works for roads, railways, fibre optic cable networks, and an expansion of the airport in Mato Grosso’s capital, Cuiabá. The Quadrante Rondon route aims to improve transport infrastructure in states such as Mato Grosso, Acre, and Rondônia, which border Bolivia and Peru. The other four routes of the wider South America trade integration plan include two routes to boost transport networks in the northern states of Amazonas, Pará, Roraima, and Amapá (‘Escudo Guianense’ and ‘Manta-Manaus’), as well as two routes in the south (‘Capricórnio’ and ‘Porto Alegre-Coquimbo’) which will involve infrastructure projects in states that border Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, such as Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul.
