In brief: Nicaragua’s economic growth slows in annual terms

*Nicaragua’s central bank (BCN) has released new figures which show that GDP growth in the first quarter of 2024 was 3.7%. This is down from 5.2% in the fourth quarter of 2023, and 6.0% in the third quarter of 2023 but up from 3.5% in the second quarter. Growth was driven by hotels & restaurants (up 17.6% year-on-year), followed by construction (16.0%), electricity (8.9%), water (8.5%), trade (7.3%), and exploitation of mines & quarries (5.1%) while fishing & aquiculture was down 14.7% year-on-year and manufacturing was down 2.2%. In seasonally-adjusted terms, Nicaragua’s GDP grew 0.1% in the first quarter of 2024 compared with the previous quarter.
