In brief: Brazil’s retail sales up in April

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest figures on retail sales, showing a monthly rise of 0.9% in April. This marks a greater increase than the 0.3% monthly rise registered in March and an increase of 2.2% compared to the sales volume of April 2023. The accumulated sales volume in the 12 months until April 2024 was up 2.7% from the previous 12-month period. Of the eight product categories measured, five registered monthly increases in April, with the greatest rise registered in office supplies, information, and communication (+14.2%). In a press release, the Ibge highlighted that the strong sales figures for office supplies and other information and communication products come after particularly low sales figures registered in March, when the category saw a monthly drop of 10.1%. The Ibge also pointed out that discounts on some major brands had contributed to the rise in the category’s sales in April.
