Mexico’s national electoral institute (INE) had scarcely released the definitive vote tally from the presidential elections on 2 June before it was down to business for President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, who swept to victory for the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) with almost 60% of the vote. On 10 June Sheinbaum met with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, her political ally and mentor, in the pair’s first official meeting since the election. Constitutional reforms were high on the agenda, with Sheinbaum’s apparent commitment to seeing through López Obrador’s controversial judicial reform stoking concerns among the political opposition and financial sectors.
