*Mexico’s ministries of economy (SE) and labour (STPS) have released a joint statement saying the government has accepted a request from the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) to review whether workers’ rights are being denied at a facility run by multinational car manufacturer Volkswagen in the central state of Puebla. The USTR filed the request on 28 May under the rapid response labour mechanism (RRM) of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The joint statement announced Mexico’s agreement to the request and declared that the STPS will now conduct an internal review within a 45-day deadline, as of the complaint’s date of receipt. The statement underscored the Mexican government’s “commitment to effectively implement the labour legislation, as well as the provisions established in the USMCA, thus guaranteeing compliance with and protection of the collective rights of the country’s workers.”
