MEXICO: High-profile tourist killings raise alarm
The murder of three foreign tourists on a surfing and camping trip in Mexico’s state of Baja California grabbed headlines around the world at the beginning of May. The triple murder, believed to be the result of a botched robbery, follows other fatal attacks on tourists on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca state and the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo state in recent years. While the circumstances surrounding the incidents vary and tourists remain largely untargeted by violent crime, such attacks threaten to tarnish Mexico’s reputation as a holiday hotspot.
