ECUADOR: Narrower focus in second phase of security crackdown

The unprecedented security crackdown that has dominated President Daniel Noboa’s first six months in office will now be concentrated on a handful of Ecuador’s provinces, Noboa announced on 22 May. Claiming that criminal gangs had been beaten into a retreat around the country, Noboa declared a new state of exception aimed at strengthening security operations along the Pacific coast and in the Amazonian northeast.
