Paraguay’s Peña loses first minister

Paraguay’s government led by President Santiago Peña swore in a new justice minister on 28 May. Rodrigo Nicora, who had been serving as deputy minister of criminal policy, takes over as justice minister from Ángel Barchini, whose resignation was announced on 23 May. Barchini is the first minister to leave since Peña took office in August 2023. Although the government and Barchini have stressed that his departure is due to personal reasons, he has had a difficult time at the head of the justice ministry.
