Anger over dollar shortages. Trade unions and associations of traders and transport workers staged protests and roadblocks in Bolivia on 17 May in the western department of La Paz, the south-western department of Oruro, and the eastern department of Santa Cruz, over various complaints. Chief of these related to shortages of US dollars, which have been afflicting the country for over a year and which led the left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government in February to announce the lifting of export restrictions, the offering of assorted incentives to try and reduce spending on fuel imports, and the issuance of bonds in US dollars by the central bank (BCB) [
