President Luis Abinader is expected to win re-election handsomely when Dominican voters go to the polls on 19 May. Electoral surveys give Abinader, of the Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM), a decisive advantage over his principal rivals, veteran former president Leonel Fernández (1996-2000, 2004-2008, and 2008-2012) of Fuerza del Pueblo (FP), and Abel Martínez, the leader of the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD). Greater uncertainty, however, surrounds the outcome of the concurrent legislative elections in which the PRM is vying to win an outright majority in the lower chamber of congress and the senate.
