The reaction of governments across Latin America to Israel’s military actions in the Palestinian enclave Gaza were placed in sharp juxtaposition this week. While Argentina’s far-right president, Javier Milei, draped himself in the Israeli flag for a social media post, Colombia’s left-wing president, Gustavo Petro, announced his intention to sever diplomatic relations with Israel in a speech to mark International Labour Day on 1 May, and his foreign ministry formally confirmed the rupture the following day.
