NICARAGUA: Deepening ties with Beijing
Nicaragua’s authoritarian government led by President Daniel Ortega has announced various new initiatives with Chinese public and private firms in the areas of energy and mining. This comes amid burgeoning ties with Beijing which have continued to gather pace since December 2021, when Nicaragua switched allegiance from Taiwan to China [WR-21-50] as part of its quest for new cooperation in the face of increasing sanctions and condemnation from the US and European Union over democracy and human rights.
