*Rodrigo Díaz Worner, the governor of Chile’s southern Biobío region, has announced that steel producer Compañía Siderúrgica Huachipato (CSH) is resuming operations. The plant had decided to wind down its production of steel products last month, citing unfair competition from China, which it accused of dumping excess production on the international market at about 40% below cost. In a video posted on social media, Díaz announced that executives from CSH and its parent company, Chilean mining and industry conglomerate Grupo CAP, had confirmed the restart of operations, which he said would protect 22,000 jobs in Biobío where CSH is located. This comes days after Chile’s government led by President Gabriel Boric imposed six-month anti-dumping tariffs of between 24.9% and 33.5% on Chinese steel products.
