Argentina’s President Javier Milei visited Ushuaia, the capital of the southernmost province of Tierra del Fuego, on 4 April to meet the commander of the US Southern Command (Southcom), General Laura Richardson. Milei is intent on undertaking a complete realignment of Argentina’s geopolitical relations, forging close ties with the US and giving the cold shoulder to China, with which the country developed close relations under the Kirchnerista governments that held sway for 16 of the previous 20 years. Milei called for a US base in Ushuaia and made no secret of his determination to expand Argentina’s presence in the Antarctic.
