In brief: Brazil’s inflation decelerates in March

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for its consumer price index (Ipca), putting monthly inflation at 0.16% in March. This is down 0.67 percentage points from the previous month and down 0.55 percentage points compared to March 2023. The latest figure brings annual inflation to 3.93%. According to the latest forecasts from private sector economists and analysts surveyed by the central bank (BCB), annual inflation is expected to close the year at 3.76%. Of the nine categories of products and services measured, six registered a rise in prices in March. The highest monthly inflation was registered in the food & beverages category (0.53%), although this is down 0.42 percentage points from February. In a press release, the Ibge attributed the overall monthly deceleration to slower inflation in the education category. In February, monthly inflation was mainly driven by education (4.98%), amid the start of the academic year, but in March the category registered only 0.14% inflation.
