Troop deployments spark Guyanese concern

Tensions between Venezuela and Guyana over the disputed Essequibo region had appeared to be cooling two months after Venezuela’s provocative 3 December referendum, in which voters supported annexing the territory. But on 9 February Guyana’s foreign minister, Hugh Todd, highlighted “inconsistencies” between Venezuela’s “diplomatic and military posture”. Todd accused the Venezuelan authorities of preaching peace whilst simultaneously building up a military presence on the border.
