*With 73 votes in favour, Ecuador’s 137-member national assembly has voted to send the government’s 2024 budget proposal back to President Daniel Noboa with recommendations. Noboa now has 10 days to either accept these recommendations and submit a modified budget proposal, or to send back the original budget for legislators to vote upon. During yesterday’s debate, legislators expressed concern that the budget proposal breaches constitutional requirements for spending on healthcare and education, and also called for greater clarity on the costs of the major security crackdown being waged by the Noboa administration. The budget proposal, which outlines US$35.54bn in planned spending, plans for a fiscal deficit of US$4.81bn.
