Peru’s congress stopped short of impeaching the entire judicial council (JNJ) this week but it did vote to dismiss two of the seven magistrates sitting on the body that hires and fires judges and prosecutors and appoints the heads of the country’s electoral authorities. In an arbitrary and politicised session bereft of debate, an alliance between far right and far left parties voted to dismiss the two magistrates investigating the suspended attorney general, Patricia Benavides, for corruption and collusion with members of congress.
