BOLIVIA: MAS divisions deepen
The bitter infighting within Bolivia’s ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) engendered by the determination of former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) to run for top office yet again took a new turn this week. Tensions have been escalating between Morales and the government led by President Luis Arce for months, with neither politician prepared to back down in their pursuit of the presidency in 2025. But this time a new actor was drawn into the internal acrimony: Álvaro García Linera. Morales lashed out at his longtime former vice president after García Linera cautioned that factionalism could result in electoral defeat for the MAS and urged both Arce and Morales to make way for a new generation in the party.
