VENEZUELA: Preparing for a return of sanctions
There were further signs this week that the Venezuelan government is preparing for a return of US sanctions and will not take the necessary steps to avoid such an outcome. Having barred all leading opposition candidates from this year’s election and expelled United Nations (UN) human rights staff amid an intensifying crackdown, the government is shoring up ties with allies including Russia and Turkey to mitigate the impact of sanctions being reimposed.
