*The Dominican Republic’s government led by President Luis Abinader has released new figures showing that the national poverty rate dropped to 23.0% of the population in 2023, down from 27.7% in 2022, while extreme poverty dropped from 3.8% in 2022 to 3.2% in 2023. According to a report by the economy, planning & development ministry, rural poverty dropped from 30.9% of the population in 2022 to 24.6% in 2022 while urban poverty dropped from 27.0% to 22.7%. However, the same report highlights a slight rise in the Gini coefficient (a measure of inequality in which 0 = total equality and 1 = absolute inequality), from 0.376 in 2022 to 0.378 in 2023. It explains the rise in terms of an increase in inequality in urban areas where the Gini coefficient passed from 0.377 to 0.380.
