NICARAGUA/PANAMA: Martinelli asylum request tests Nicaragua-Panama relations
Nicaragua’s recent authorisation of the request for political asylum from Panama’s former president Ricardo Martinelli (2009-2014) [WR-24-05] is stoking bilateral tensions after Panama refused to grant him safe passage. The decision casts further doubt on the future of the disgraced former president, who recently lost an appeal before the supreme court (CSJ) against a money laundering conviction, prior to which he had been the frontrunner ahead of May 2024 presidential elections.
