In brief: Paraguay reports smaller trade deficit

*Paraguay’s economy & finance ministry (MEF) has announced that the country’s foreign trade totalled US$27.99bn in 2023, an 8.4% increase on 2022. According to the report on foreign trade, carried out under the vice ministry of economics and planning, exports in 2023 totalled US$11.89bn while imports totalled US$16.10bn, leaving a trade deficit of US$4.21bn. This compares with a deficit of US$5.93bn in 2022. In 2023, Paraguay exported to a total of 138 countries, six fewer than in 2022, and imported from 174 countries, nine more than in 2022. The MEF notes that Brazil was Paraguay’s main trade partner last year, accounting for 24.8% of foreign trade, followed by Argentina (19.5%), China (19.4%), the US (5.5%), and Chile (4.6%).
