In brief: Tourism picks up in Cuba

*Cuba’s government has reported that 2.44m international tourists visited the country in 2023, up 822,892 on the previous year, according to reports in official media such as Cubadebate. According to the same report, the main source countries were Canada (936,436), Russia (184,819), the US (159,032), Spain (89,285), and Germany (69,475). The same report forecasts that tourist arrivals will reach 3.2m this year. However, this remains significantly less than levels recorded prior to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic when Cuba was receiving between 4m and 5m tourists per year, making tourism one of the mainstays of the economy.
